Quick answer
Category pages should carry a short unique intro, buying advice, search-matched titles, crawlable links to subcategories and products, a self-canonical on each paginated page and controlled filters. Product pages need your own description, clear price, stock and delivery details, real photos, reviews and Product structured data. On Shopify, link to the canonical /products/ URLs; on WooCommerce, clean up thin tag and attribute archives.
Key takeaways
- Category pages win broad searches; product pages win specific ones.
- Give each paginated category page its own canonical, not page 1.
- Rewrite manufacturer descriptions with local warranty and delivery details.
- Product structured data lets Google show price and availability.
- Control filter and sort URLs so they do not flood the index.
In an online store, category pages usually win the broad searches (“air purifier price in Nepal”) and product pages win the specific ones (a model name). Both are often left as thin templates: a heading, a grid and a manufacturer description copied from everywhere else. This guide covers what we change on both, on Shopify and WooCommerce.
It is the core of our ecommerce SEO services.
Category pages: make them worth ranking
- A unique intro of a few sentences above or near the grid: what the range covers, who it is for, how to choose. Put longer buying advice below the products.
- Clear headings and title tags that match how people search, including Nepal-specific terms such as price in Nepal where relevant.
- Links to subcategories and popular products as normal HTML links.
- Pagination with a unique URL per page and a self-referencing canonical on each, as Google’s pagination guidance recommends.
- Filters under control. Let only useful filter combinations be indexed; keep endless sort and filter variations out. Our canonical vs noindex guide explains the options.
Product pages: answer the buyer
- Your own description. Rewrite manufacturer text: who it suits, what is in the box, warranty and service in Nepal, delivery areas.
- Price, stock and delivery shown clearly, matching your Merchant Center feed if you use one.
- Real photos and specifications, with descriptive alt text.
- Reviews and questions from real customers.
- Product structured data with price, availability and reviews, so Google can show product details in results.
- Variants: one URL for the product with variant selection, or separate URLs only when variants are searched separately; canonicals must reflect the choice.
Category vs product page SEO
| Category page | Product page | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Win broad, comparison searches | Win specific model searches |
| Unique content | Intro plus buying advice | Own description, specs, warranty, delivery |
| Structured data | Breadcrumbs (ItemList optional) | Product with price, availability, reviews |
| Main risk | Filter and sort duplicates | Copied manufacturer text, variant duplicates |
URL structure and internal links
- Keep URLs short and stable; follow Google’s ecommerce URL structure guidance.
- Link from buying guides and blog posts to the matching category, and from each product to its category.
- When a product is discontinued, keep the page with alternatives if it still gets searches, or 301 it to the closest product or category.
Shopify and WooCommerce notes
Shopify creates product URLs under both /products/ and /collections/…/products/. Make sure internal links use the canonical /products/ path, and check that your theme’s collection filters do not generate indexable duplicates. See our Shopify website design service.
WooCommerce sites often carry indexable tag archives, attribute archives and thin category pages from plugins. Decide which archives deserve to rank and noindex or remove the rest. See our WooCommerce website design service.
On both, slow themes and heavy apps hurt mobile shoppers first; our technical SEO services cover speed and templates.

Yes. A short unique intro and some buying advice help searchers and give Google context. Keep the products visible near the top.
You can, but so can every other seller. Rewriting it with your own details gives the page a reason to rank.
Only filter combinations people actually search for and that you can make useful. Keep the rest out of the index.
It handles basics such as canonicals and sitemaps. Content, internal links, filters and speed still need work.
