SEO AND AI SEARCH

The 20% of SEO That Gets You Cited by AI

Most AEO strategies are just SEO fundamentals done properly. Here is the small slice that actually changes when AI writes the answer instead of Google ranking a link.

Everyone is renaming SEO. Not much of it is new.

Someone on the team asked last week if we needed an “AEO strategy” now. Something separate from SEO.

Short answer: mostly no.

Ahrefs puts it plainly in “Learn 80% of AEO in 19 Minutes”. Search is moving from links to answers. That part is real.

It is already changing click-through rates. Even for pages that still rank first on Google. A page can hold the number one spot and still get zero clicks, because the AI answer above it already gave the reader what they needed.

But here is the part most vendors skip. Most of what gets called AEO is just SEO fundamentals, done properly, aimed at a slightly different output. Clean structure. Real expertise. Fast pages. None of that is new.

A smaller slice is genuinely new. This article splits the two apart, so you know where to actually spend effort.

What Ahrefs actually means by AEO

Ahrefs lays out seven steps. Most are not new work. They are old work, done with more discipline.

  1. Audit what AI already says about your brand. Include the parts that are wrong.
  2. Fix misinformation. Keep facts consistent across your site and any third-party profile AI might pull from.
  3. Close topic gaps. Find queries where a competitor gets mentioned and you do not.
  4. Write direct answers. Short, plain sentences near the top. Not buried in paragraph four.
  5. Add schema. Article, FAQPage, HowTo, and Speakable types help AI parse your page correctly.
  6. Build authority signals. Real E-E-A-T, quality backlinks, and being mentioned next to trusted names.
  7. Track citations over time. A one-time check tells you nothing about the trend.

None of this replaces SEO. Ahrefs is direct about that. AEO sits on top of an existing SEO foundation, the kind our content SEO service builds first. It does not work as a shortcut around one.

A site with thin content, slow pages, or no backlinks will not fix that by adding FAQ schema. The schema just makes the same weak page easier for AI to skip past faster.

Where Semrush disagrees, and the number that matters more

Semrush frames this differently. Their answer engine optimization guide treats AEO as its own discipline. Separate from SEO. Separate from a third category they call ASO, which covers visibility across AI agent workflows in general.

Their reasoning is simple. Ranking well in classic Google search does not guarantee a citation in AI Mode or ChatGPT. Semrush has watched brands with strong rankings get skipped by AI answers entirely. Meanwhile a page with a weaker ranking gets cited instead, because it answered the exact question better.

One stat from that guide is worth sitting with. Semrush reports that the average AI search visitor converts at a rate that makes them 4.4 times more valuable than a typical organic search visitor. Fewer visits. Each one means more.

Another stat matters just as much. Roughly 95 percent of ChatGPT citations pull from content published or updated within the last 10 months. Old pages, even good ones, are close to invisible here if nobody has touched them since last year.

That single number changes how you should think about your content calendar. A three-year-old cornerstone page with great information but no recent update is quietly losing ground, even if its Google ranking has not moved at all. This is the same freshness problem we cover in why AI Overviews skip your site entirely.

What both sources actually agree on

Ahrefs walks through the seven-step AEO framework referenced above in under 20 minutes.

Ahrefs and Semrush disagree on the label. Is AEO a new discipline, or an extension of SEO? They do not disagree on what actually earns a citation.

Content that is fresh. Content that is structured as a direct answer. Content backed by mentions on sites AI already trusts.

That overlap matters more than the label does. Two competing SEO tool companies landing on the same three levers is a stronger signal than either one alone. When your competitors’ tools disagree on theory but agree on practice, that is the part worth copying.

SEO vs AEO: what actually changes

Factor Traditional SEO AEO
Goal Rank in search results Get cited inside the AI answer
Content shape Comprehensive, signal-rich pages Short, declarative, direct answers
Measured by Rankings, clicks, impressions Citations and mentions tracked
User journey Click-driven engagement Often zero-click visibility
Freshness Helpful, not always critical ~95% of ChatGPT citations pull from content updated in the last 10 months

The 20 percent that actually moves the needle

Strip out the vendor framing. Here is the actual 20 percent that moves a citation.

First, off-site mentions. Places AI models already trust: Reddit threads, Wikipedia, established news outlets, and .edu or .gov domains. A CMSWire piece on Reddit’s rise in AI citations makes the case well. Reddit threads get pulled into AI answers at a rate way out of proportion to Reddit’s actual share of the web. A genuine, useful comment on the right thread can outweigh another blog post nobody reads.

Second, freshness. That 95 percent, 10-month stat from Semrush is not a coincidence. Review and update your cornerstone pages on a real schedule. Add a new stat, a new example, a new section. Do not just change the date at the top.

Third, direct-answer structure. Put a two or three sentence answer at the very top of any page that targets a real question. Skip the brand story. Say the thing, then explain it.

Everything else, the schema, the backlinks, the general E-E-A-T signals, is the SEO you should already be doing well. It supports the 20 percent. It is not the 20 percent itself. Teams that get this backwards spend months on schema markup while their actual content sits untouched for two years.

What this looks like on an actual audit

Here is what this looks like in practice, not in theory.

When we start an AI SEO audit for a client, the first step is never schema markup. It is a plain search: ask ChatGPT, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews the exact questions a real customer would ask. Not the brand name. The actual question.

Most of the time, the client’s own site is not the source of the answer. A competitor’s blog post is. Or a Reddit thread from two years ago. Or, more often than expected, nothing at all, because no page anywhere answers that specific question in a direct, current way.

That gap is the actual work. Not “add more schema.” Write the direct answer that does not exist yet, keep it current, and get it mentioned somewhere AI already trusts.

This takes longer than a checklist implies. It also works, because it targets the real gap instead of a generic tactic list copied from a blog post like this one. If you want us to run this exact check on your own site, our technical SEO service starts here.

A realistic timeline, not a magic switch

Ahrefs gives a real timeline. It is not flattering for anyone hoping for a quick win.

Established brands with an existing SEO foundation can see early citation wins in weeks to a few months. Mostly by fixing inconsistencies and closing obvious gaps.

New or lesser-known brands should plan for 12 to 18 months. That is how long it takes to build enough authority and off-site presence for AI systems to trust and cite them consistently.

There is a real upside for businesses starting later, in markets where almost nobody has done any of this yet. In Nepal specifically, very few competitors have touched schema markup, off-site mentions, or answer-first content structure. That gap means the same fixes compound faster here than in a market where every rival already has clean AEO fundamentals in place.

Set that expectation early with anyone paying for this work. A citation is a visibility and trust signal. It is not a guaranteed traffic event, and it does not happen overnight. Anyone promising an AI citation in two weeks is selling something else. Our own SEO services page walks through what a realistic first 90 days actually looks like.

Depends who you ask. Ahrefs treats it as SEO with a sharper focus, built on an existing SEO foundation. Semrush treats it as a distinct discipline because ranking well does not guarantee an AI citation. Practically, you need SEO fundamentals in place before AEO tactics do much.
