Quick answer
In mid-August 2026, Reddit’s share of ChatGPT citations fell from about 3.8% to 0.5%, a drop of roughly 86%, according to Promptwatch data reported by Semrush and Axios. The likely cause is a change in how ChatGPT searches: from 8 August it began running far more searches aimed at specific, named websites, which favours official sites over forums. OpenAI says ChatGPT still cites Reddit. For businesses, the lesson is to make your own website the clearest source about you, and to spread your visibility across several trusted places.
Key takeaways
- Reddit’s share of ChatGPT citations fell about 86% between early and mid-August 2026.
- ChatGPT started sending far more searches straight to named websites, which favours official sites over forums.
- Reddit still appears in ChatGPT, just much less often. Google’s AI features cut Reddit citations too, but more gradually.
- Your own website is now more important for AI visibility, not less.
- A spread of sources, including reviews, directories, press and video, protects you when any one platform changes.
For two years, one piece of advice kept coming up in marketing circles. Want to show up in ChatGPT? Get onto Reddit.
It sounded reasonable. Ask ChatGPT almost anything and a Reddit thread would often appear among the sources.
Then, in August 2026, that changed almost overnight.
The numbers
According to Promptwatch data covered by Semrush, Reddit made up about 3.8% of all ChatGPT citations between 18 July and 7 August. By 14 to 17 August, its share was down to 0.5%.
Axios reported the same data in finer detail: 3.83% down to 0.52%, a relative fall of 86.4%.
A separate analysis by Elmo found an even sharper drop in the consumer ChatGPT app, from 4.67% to 0.38%.
The timeline
- 18 July to 7 August: Reddit averages about 3.8% of ChatGPT citations.
- 8 August: ChatGPT changes how it searches the web. More on this below.
- 14 August: Reddit’s share falls below 1% in a single day.
- 14 to 17 August: Reddit averages about 0.5%.
That is not a slow trend. It looks like a switch being flipped.

Why did ChatGPT stop citing Reddit so often?
The most convincing explanation so far is not about Reddit at all. It is about how ChatGPT looks things up.
How ChatGPT searches, in plain terms
When you ask ChatGPT a question that needs fresh information, it does not run one search. It breaks your question into several smaller searches, reads the results and then writes an answer. This is often called query fan-out.
Some of those searches can use the site: operator. That tells a search engine to look only inside one named website, for example site:example.com.
What changed on 8 August
Promptwatch found that on 8 August, the share of ChatGPT’s background searches using the site: operator jumped from 0.37% to 16.8%. Elmo described it as a 46-fold increase in one day.
In other words, ChatGPT started asking specific, named websites directly: official company sites, documentation and institutions.
ChatGPT didn’t stop searching the open web. It also started asking specific, named websites directly.
Klaas Foppen, Promptwatch
Forums like Reddit are rarely the website ChatGPT chooses to search directly. So as more searches went straight to official sites, Reddit’s share of citations fell.
Elmo also noticed something telling. Reddit’s share in the ChatGPT app fell to roughly the level already seen in OpenAI’s API, which had stayed flat at about 0.4% to 0.7%. The gap between the two, previously around eleven times, disappeared.
Not everyone thinks that is the whole story
Search Engine Journal pointed out a timing problem. The search change happened on 8 August, but Reddit’s share only collapsed on 14 August, six days later. The same analysis noted that the average number of background searches per answer also nearly doubled on 8 August, from 1.08 to 1.83.
Before you make any changes to how you utilize Reddit for AI search optimization, check your own domain’s citation trends.

That is good advice. The mechanism may be more than one change, but the practical lesson is the same: look at your own data before reacting.
Is Reddit gone from ChatGPT for good?
No, and it is worth being careful here.
OpenAI told Semrush that it does not set a fixed level of visibility for individual sites, and that ChatGPT still cites Reddit. Promptwatch itself called its early findings provisional.
Reddit said the drop had no meaningful impact on its business, and made a fair point about why brands should be there in the first place:
For communicators, Reddit’s value is in the real conversations that people are having about your brand today, not where it surfaces tomorrow.

Google’s AI features moved too, but slowly
It was not only ChatGPT. Over the same period, Promptwatch measured an 11.3% fall in Reddit citations in Google AI Overviews and a 30.5% fall in Google AI Mode.
The difference is the speed. Google’s changes were gradual. ChatGPT’s was a cliff.
Semrush also notes that Reddit went through a similar collapse in ChatGPT in August 2025. Big swings in AI sourcing are not new. They keep surprising people who planned around the last swing.

Why did so many marketers treat Reddit as an AI shortcut?
Because for a while, it seemed to work.
AI models value real conversations, and Reddit is full of them. Off-site mentions on trusted platforms were one of the three levers we highlighted when we wrote about what earns AI citations.

The trouble is what some businesses did with that idea. Instead of joining conversations, they planted them. Fake questions from new accounts. Friendly replies that read like ads. Whole threads written to be picked up by AI.
Google has also pushed back on the idea that Reddit gets special treatment. Search Engine Roundtable’s September 2026 report notes Google denying any special ranking preference for Reddit.
When a tactic becomes a shortcut, platforms tend to close it. Whatever OpenAI’s exact reasons, the effect is the same: forum posting is a much weaker route into ChatGPT than it was in July.
What does this mean for your business?
Here is the part most coverage misses. For most businesses, this change is good news.
If ChatGPT is sending more searches straight to named websites, then your own website is more likely to be read when someone asks about you. The question is whether it gives ChatGPT clear, accurate answers when it gets there.
Make your official website the obvious source
Think about the pages ChatGPT might search directly when someone asks about a business like yours:
- Service pages that say plainly what you do, who it is for, where you operate and what it costs or how pricing works.
- An About page with real facts: when you started, who runs the business, who you have worked with.
- FAQ sections that answer the questions customers ask before they call.
- Contact and location details that match your Google Business Profile exactly.
This is the core of our SEO services in Nepal: making sure the pages that describe your business are the clearest, most complete source about it.
Let OpenAI’s search crawler in
None of this matters if ChatGPT cannot reach your pages. OpenAI recommends allowing its search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, in your robots.txt file if you want to appear in ChatGPT search results. Firewall and security settings can block it without anyone noticing, so check with whoever manages your site. Our technical SEO team checks this as standard.
What this looks like in practice
For study abroad consultancies, for example, the website structure matters a great deal: separate, clear pages for each destination, course type and test. That is the approach behind our work with Goreto Educational Consultancy, where the website architecture, search and AI visibility were planned together.
Where should your AI visibility effort go instead?
Spread it out. That is the whole idea.
AI systems pull from many kinds of sources, and any one of them can be turned down without warning. The brands that barely noticed this change were the ones that never depended on Reddit in the first place.
1. Your own website
Direct answers near the top of key pages, kept current. This is now the most important source you control.
2. Google Business Profile and reviews
Reviews are public, specific and constantly refreshed, which makes them useful evidence about a business. Solid local SEO keeps your profile complete and consistent.
3. Credible directories and listings
Industry directories and trusted local listings confirm that your business exists and what it does. Keep your name, address and services identical on every one.
4. Press, trade sites and partners
Expert comments, interviews and data in publications your customers read. Ahrefs found that branded web mentions correlated with AI Overview visibility more strongly than any other factor it tested across 75,000 brands.
5. Video
In a 2026 benchmark covering the same 75,000 brands, Ahrefs reported that YouTube mentions showed the strongest correlation with AI brand visibility. Simple, honest explainer videos count.
6. Social channels
Active, genuine social profiles show that a business is real and responsive. Our social media marketing services treat social as proof, not just promotion.

How do you check whether this affected your brand?
Start with the questions your buyers ask, not your brand name. Then track them the same way every month.
- Write down 10 to 15 real prompts. For a clinic, that might be “best skin clinic in Kathmandu for acne scars.” For a consultancy, “which consultancy helps with Australian student visas.”
- Run each prompt in ChatGPT once a month, logged out or in a fresh chat so past conversations do not shape the answer.
- Record three things: whether you are mentioned, which competitors are mentioned, and which websites the answer links to as sources.
- Keep it in a simple sheet with columns for date, prompt, mentioned yes or no, competitors named and sources cited.
- Compare month to month. If Reddit threads used to appear as sources and now do not, look at what replaced them.
At Queens Digital we track a fixed set of 15 prompts for our own brand. Using the same prompts every month is what makes the trend readable. One-off checks tell you almost nothing.

Reddit and AI visibility: the old assumption versus a better approach
| Question | Old assumption | Better approach now |
|---|---|---|
| Why be on Reddit? | It is a shortcut into AI answers | It is where real buyers talk; AI visibility is a side effect |
| What to post | Brand-friendly answers from new accounts | Genuinely useful answers, with affiliation disclosed |
| Most important AI source | Forums and communities | Your own official website, kept clear and current |
| Where else to invest | Mostly Reddit | Reviews, directories, press, video and social |
| How to measure | Occasional brand-name checks | Fixed set of buyer prompts, checked monthly |
| When a platform changes | Scramble for the next shortcut | Barely notice, because no single source carries you |
Should you still post on Reddit at all?
Yes, if you can do it honestly. Reddit is still one of the places people go to ask real questions before they buy.
How to do it properly
- Answer questions in your field with specific, useful detail.
- Say who you are when you recommend your own business.
- Read and follow each community’s rules on self-promotion.
- Link to your site only when a page genuinely answers the question better than a comment can.
- Stay for the long term. Accounts with a history of helpful answers are trusted. New accounts that only post links are not.
Treat it as reputation work, not a citation machine. If you cannot commit that kind of time, skip it. A neglected account full of promotional replies does more harm than no account at all.
What should you do over the next 90 days?
This change is a useful reminder that citation behaviour is volatile. seoClarity tracked ChatGPT citation volumes falling by over 90% in some markets during March and April 2026, then recovering in May. Brand authority is what survives those swings.
Here is a practical plan:
- List 10 to 15 buyer prompts and record who ChatGPT mentions today.
- Pick the five questions you most want to own. Make sure your website answers each one directly, near the top of a relevant page.
- Check that OAI-SearchBot and Googlebot can reach your site.
- Complete your Google Business Profile and two or three credible directory listings, with identical business details.
- Ask recent happy clients for reviews.
- Pitch one expert comment or article to a respected publication in your industry.
- Re-run the same prompts at 30, 60 and 90 days and compare.
It is not glamorous. It also does not disappear when one platform changes its mind. If you want a team to run it with you, Queens Digital is a digital marketing agency in Nepal that does this work every month through our AI SEO and GEO service.
