AI VISIBILITY

What AI Sees When It Picks Between You and a Competitor

Ask ChatGPT or Google’s AI for the best business in your field, and a competitor comes up instead of you. It is rarely about your website alone. It is about what the rest of the web says, or does not say, about you.

Quick answer

AI tools tend to recommend the businesses the web already talks about. In an Ahrefs study of 75,000 brands, branded web mentions had the strongest correlation with AI Overview visibility (0.664), well ahead of backlinks (0.218). Ahrefs’ 2026 benchmark found YouTube mentions were the strongest single signal. If a competitor is recommended instead of you, it is probably mentioned more often, in more places, with more consistent details. Closing the gap means earning mentions and fixing inconsistencies, not just publishing more pages.

Key takeaways

  • Branded web mentions correlate with AI visibility about three times more strongly than backlinks.
  • Brands in the top quarter for mentions got over ten times more AI Overview mentions than the next quarter down.
  • YouTube mentions were the strongest single signal in Ahrefs’ 2026 benchmark.
  • Reviews and a complete Google Business Profile feed the prominence Google uses for local results.
  • A competitor gap audit shows exactly which sources name your competitors and not you.

It is one of the most frustrating things to watch.

You ask an AI assistant for the best clinic, consultancy or agency for a specific need. It gives a confident shortlist. Your competitor is on it. You are not.

Your website may even be better: faster, clearer, more detailed.

The reason is usually outside your website. AI tools are trying to give a safe answer, and the safest answer is the business the rest of the web already talks about.

How AI tools decide who to name

When an AI assistant answers a question like “best dental clinic in Lalitpur,” it pulls information from many sources: websites, reviews, directories, news, forums and videos. A business that appears consistently across many of those sources looks like a safe recommendation. A business that appears only on its own website looks like an unknown.

What does the data say AI tools look for?

The clearest evidence comes from an Ahrefs study of 75,000 brands, published in May 2025. It measured how strongly different factors correlated with a brand appearing in Google’s AI Overviews.

The ranking of factors

  • Branded web mentions: 0.664
  • Branded anchors, where others link using your name: 0.527
  • Branded search volume: 0.392
  • Domain Rating: 0.326
  • Referring domains: 0.295
  • Backlinks: 0.218
  • Ad spend: 0.215

If you’re in the bottom 50% of web mentions, you’re essentially invisible to AI.

Correlation is not proof of cause. But the pattern is strong, and it matches how these tools behave in practice.

Why do mentions matter more than links?

Because a mention is evidence that people talk about you.

Links help ranking. Mentions help recommendation.

A backlink helps search engines find and rank a page. A mention, when many independent sites name your business alongside a topic, helps an AI system decide that you are real, relevant and trusted for that topic.

The gap between known and unknown brands is steep

Ahrefs found that brands in the top 25% for web mentions averaged 169 AI Overview mentions, more than ten times the brands in the next quarter down.

Ahrefs also noted that throwing money at paid search does not necessarily boost AI Overview visibility. Ad spend had one of the weakest correlations in the study.

Mentions now bring clicks too

Since 7 May 2026, ChatGPT has added clickable links on brand names inside its answers. seoClarity measured a 110% month-on-month rise in AI referral traffic in June. Being named now means being clickable.

Does YouTube really matter this much?

The newer data says yes. In May 2026, Ahrefs released a benchmark covering the same 75,000 brands. According to its announcement, YouTube mentions showed the strongest correlation with AI brand visibility.

The teams that win will continue to follow and learn from the data, while prioritizing building genuine authority.

Why video carries so much weight

Video is where people explain, review and compare things in their own words. Transcripts, titles and descriptions turn that into text AI tools can read.

What this means for a small business

  • You do not need a polished channel. Being discussed on other people’s channels counts.
  • Short, honest explainer videos answering your most common customer questions work well.
  • Use your exact business name in titles and descriptions so the mention is clear.

The same report found that raw link volume and total page count had only a weak correlation with AI visibility.

What does our own AI visibility data show?

We track this for Queens Digital itself, using a fixed set of 15 prompts in Ubersuggest’s AI visibility tracker.

At our last check, we appeared in about 20% of those prompts, with 14 mentions and a 3.46% share of voice. Most of those mentions came from ChatGPT.

That is a modest starting point, and we say so openly. It also shows the pattern in this article clearly.

  • The prompts where we appear are topics where we have written in depth and where our work is discussed elsewhere.
  • The prompts where we do not appear are ones where other agencies are mentioned more widely across the web.

Every business can run the same check. The numbers are usually humbling and always useful.

Where do the mentions that matter come from?

1. Google Business Profile and reviews

Prominence means how well-known a business is. Prominent places are more likely to show up in search results.

Google adds that more reviews and positive ratings can help local ranking. Our local SEO services keep profiles complete and review programmes steady, and our Mega Bank Nepal case study shows what verifying and managing locations at scale looks like.

2. Credible directories and listings

Industry directories and trusted local listings confirm that your business exists and what it does.

3. News, trade and partner websites

Expert comments, interviews, data and partner pages that name you in context.

4. YouTube and podcasts

Your own channel and, even better, other people’s.

5. Social channels and communities

Genuine, active profiles and helpful community answers. Our social media marketing services treat social as proof that you are real and responsive.

6. Your own website

The anchor for everything else. Since August, ChatGPT has also been searching named websites directly far more often, as Promptwatch found and we covered in our Reddit citations field note.

How do you find the gap between you and a competitor?

Run a simple competitor gap audit. It takes an afternoon and tells you exactly where to work.

  1. Write down ten questions a customer asks before choosing a business like yours.
  2. Ask each one in ChatGPT and Google’s AI Mode. Note which businesses are named.
  3. For the competitor who appears most, list the sources the AI links to when it names them.
  4. Search for that competitor’s name on Google, YouTube and the main directories in your field. Note where they appear and you do not.
  5. Turn the gaps into a list: directories to join, publications to pitch, partners to ask, videos to make, reviews to request.

This is usually the most useful hour of AI visibility work you can do, because it replaces guessing with a specific list.

FactorCorrelationWhat it suggests
Branded web mentions0.664Being talked about matters most
Branded anchors0.527Others naming you when they link
Branded search volume0.392People looking for you by name
Domain Rating0.326General authority helps, less than expected
Backlinks0.218Raw link counts matter least of these
Ad spend0.215Paying for ads does not buy AI visibility

Why do consistent business details matter so much?

Because inconsistency creates doubt.

If your website says one address, a directory says another and your Google profile lists different services, an AI system has to guess which is right. Guessing makes you a riskier recommendation.

  1. Pick one exact version of your business name, address, phone number and service list.
  2. Update your website, Google Business Profile, social profiles and every directory to match.
  3. Check again every quarter, especially after moving, rebranding or adding services.

It is boring work. It is also one of the cheapest fixes there is. Make sure AI crawlers can reach the pages that hold these facts too. OpenAI recommends allowing OAI-SearchBot if you want to appear in ChatGPT search.

What is the core idea?

AI tools recommend the businesses they have heard of most, from the most places, with the least contradiction.

You cannot write your way onto that list with your own website alone. You have to be talked about.

That is the work behind our AI SEO and GEO services. If you want help closing the gap, Queens Digital is a digital marketing agency in Nepal offering SEO services in Nepal, local SEO and social media under one roof.
